10-25mph Winds

The winds this week has been bringing in the waves. It also brings alot of chop and currents too.
Fortunately, Makapuu has the mountains to block some of the wind so you can get some good rides.

Waikiki is Pumping

Check out the tourist on the green mattress, unaware of the good surf outside. He knows he's in heaven.

K. Umeda Original

Look what I saw in the parking lot at the beach. Here is one of my first surfboards that I shaped over 10 years ago. It belonged to Joe and he gave it to one of his friends awhile back. Check out the original laminates for my shaper logo. I almost forgot about those logos. Still surfing after all these years!

Maguro-Ya for dinner

Yuka and I went to a Japanese restaurant in Kaimuki called Maguro-Ya. Maguro is tuna in Japanese and thats whats for dinner. We sat at the sushi bar and had alot of the sushi chef's reccomendations. This was the most I have ever spent at a restaurant for 2 people. We both enjoyed ourselves so it was worth it. I don't even know the names of all the dishes we had because Yuka was speaking Japanese most of the time, but she knows what I like to eat so I left all the ordering to her.

Bud Light +

Bud Light plus Tomato juice. Not my favorite, there are better combinations like Bud Light Lime or even Bud Light Wheat tasted better than this.

Saturday Session

We were lucky to get some waves over the weekend.

Keep It Simple St*p#d Fish- 5' 9 x 21 x 2 5/8 deep swallowtail. "If it ain't broken then don't fix it." This is the basic round nose fish design. Full and wide with a single to double concave; it features a beak nose to tone down the thickness in the nose. The main function of this board is paddle easy and catch alot of waves. This design surfs fast in knee to head high waves.

Homemade leis

Today is graduation day for alot of University of Hawaii and other college graduates. My mom and her friend made these leis from flowers and ti leaves straight from their backyard. It took them two days to collect the pakalana flower to make this lei.

Test Drive @ Diamond Head Cliffs

This is a new model: 5' 8 x 19" x 2 1/4 winged roundtail " Slingshot." It has a low rocker throughout the entry to the tail. The outline has a full nose and tail. The bottom is a medium single - double concave which seems to work well for small waves giving it some lift and lets the water flow though the tail end of the board. Roundpins are usually sticky and have more drawn out turns so I added a wing which loosens up the board and makes it release quicker off the top.
My preference in fins is to make them tri-quads so you can have the option to ride it as a quad or thruster. Today I rode it as a quad and it was fast and loose.

I gathered up John, Darin, and even Yuka for a cold mid morning surf mission to Diamond Head.

It was cold windy and the current was taking me out to sea. It was worth it because I saw everyone get some good rides.
